Stanwyck Cromwell

Bio

Stanwyck E. Cromwell, is a Connecticut-based, second-generation Guyanese-born visual artist and a retired Adjunct Art Professor, who has spent the vast amount of his adult life in the United States of America. Stanwyck has earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A), from Charter Oak State College and a Master of Fine Arts Degree (M.F.A) Degree from the University of Hartford, Hartford Art School. During his lengthy career as an artist, he was able to manage both his career as a practicing artist and that of a professor, by fusing both professions into one entity. His artworks are saturated with vibrant colors, reminiscent of his Guyanese heritage and the Caribbean Diaspora. There is a certain sense of spiritual awareness, in his work, as he is able to capture the multi-cultural practice of spiritualism and ethnicity, without referring to a particular culture. In addition, his work is laden with images of black-eye-peas, cowrie shells and other symbols, which are sometimes used metaphorically and differ in meaning, depending on the context in which they are applied.

WEUSI Artist Collective, Black Dimensions in Art Inc. (B.D.A) and the Windsor Art Center, are just a few organizations, that he’s involved in. In addition, Stanwyck serves on the Town of Bloomfield Arts and Culture Committee and also as a deacon of the First Cathedral Church, in Bloomfield, CT. Stanwyck has exhibited extensively at such venues, as the New York State Museum, Albany, NY., Broward County African American Museum, Fort Lauderdale, FL., Huntington House Museum, Windsor, CT., William Benton Museum, Storrs, CT., Saratoga Cultural Center, Saratoga Springs, NY., Hamilton Hill Art Center, Schenectady, NY., Craven Arts Center and Gallery, New Bern, N.C., Connecticut Historical Society and Museum, Hartford, CT. and many more galleries. In addition, his art is amongst many notable collectors, nationally and internationally.
